Music
All students in kindergarten through fourth grades have music twice each week. Students in fifth through eighth grades have music once each week. Their course of study throughout the year includes singing with good vocal technique, the reading and writing of music, music history, exploring music of other cultures, and playing instruments. Students in fourth through eighth grade combine music and drama in an operetta each year. Our students have many choir opportunities including required choirs in K - 2, and 3 – 5, and 6 - 8 grade choirs. Trinity has a fourth through eighth grade instrumental program that includes three bands (beginning, intermediate, and advanced). Band students are also given the experience of playing in pep band. LibraryThe library program at Trinity Lutheran School is designed to work with the teachers to develop lifelong readers who are comfortable in any library situation and are able to competently seek the materials they desire. Students from Pre-4+ through 8th grade are offered weekly access to the library. Our program is much more than just the weekly selection and checking out of books and videos. The younger students are taught the basics of book care, library behavior, listening skills, and appreciation of books. During story time a theme is stressed and books of a related nature are presented. Books are always identified as fiction or nonfiction and the children are taught to identify authors, illustrators, and publishers. Students are taught how to find their way through a book by studying the various parts such as the title page, index, table of contents, and glossary. Pretests are given in the middle grades to determine various skill levels. Students are then given many hands-on experiences in using the card catalog to locate fiction and nonfiction on the shelves. They also practice searching for facts in an almanac and locating articles in journals. Individual assistance is given when the classroom teachers assign students reports. While we have general encyclopedias from five different publishers plus many specialized encyclopedias, we endeavor to guide students to broaden their research beyond the easy-to-find encyclopedia entry. Book talks are alternated with skills lessons in the upper grades. The librarian attempts to encourage the readers to expand their reading interests by introducing them to new and often unexplored topics. The librarian devotes much time to making the library an attractive and educational environment. We want the weekly classroom visits to the library to provide a pleasant learning experience. In addition, the materials carefully selected for our collection are intended to glorify God and to lead students to pursue God-pleasing recreational reading. We also endeavor to find research materials that are in accord with Holy Scripture. Life-SkillsSeventh & Eighth Grade Only - The life skills program is concerned with developing attitudes, appreciation, understanding, and abilities necessary for achieving satisfying personal and family life. Through a study of nutrition, textiles and clothing, money management, study skills, consumer economics and art, the students develop skills, which assist them in becoming more independent and productive. The subject matter unifies and integrates knowledge from all academic areas. |
